The difference between an great and mediocre paper is that a average paper wont make you want to keep reading, but it isn't so bad that you want to stop reading it. A good paper draws the reader in with the intro paragraph, they use extreme details to get the reader to actually have a vivid picture in their head of what is being described. They also have a flow to their paper, it is organized, the reader doesn't have to jump back and forth to paragraphs to have an understanding of the entire story. What I think that is most important is a sense of humor in a writer, because if a reader picks up on the same sense of humor, he is going to remember that while critiquing it.
